The next generation of local tradespeople are learning valuable construction experience at one of the borough’s biggest regeneration projects.

Recent figures from the RICS show that more people are leaving the construction industry than joining it, threatening productivity and growth. The skills shortage is now seen as an even more pressing problem in the industry than planning and regulation.

Southall Waterside housing development is home to the West London Construction Academy, developed by Berkeley Group, West London College, Ealing Council and trade partners.

Opened in October 2018, the academy gives people aged 16 and above an opportunity to train to become brick layers, plumbers and electricians.

All apprentices benefit from individual support from business champions and mentors. And, when they graduate, a number of positions will be available for apprentices with Berkeley and its supply chain at Southall Waterside itself.
