Ealing Council is aware that this is a worrying time for families looking after someone with dementia and is continuing to support those in need.
The weeks ahead will be challenging but there are a few things you can do to look after yourself, and the person you are looking after, during this time. You do not have to struggle on alone. If you have any concerns about caring for someone with dementia through the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, help is available.
Staff at Michael Flanders in Acton, a council-run day centre for residents over 65, are providing support and carrying out welfare checks on customers with dementia in their own homes on a daily basis while the centre is closed during this epidemic.
Councillor Binda Rai, the council’s cabinet member for health and adults’ services, said: “Our service is continuing to identify customers with dementia who are alone, more vulnerable and require support with personal care, preparation of meals, support with medication and shopping and we are still carrying out home visits.
“I understand this must be a particularly worrying time for people, especially if a loved one is living alone with dementia and they cannot have visitors. But, I want to assure residents that the service continues and we are doing our best to ensure vulnerable residents receive the right level of care.
“We are working very closely with the social work teams and care agencies to identify and action any concerns with regards to supporting the most vulnerable at this time.”
