A new bike port has been put up next to the West London Islamic Centre. It can hold up to 10 bicycles in a space that would only be able to accommodate one parked car.

This is an example of the types of developments Live West Ealing is putting up across the area to encourage residents to stop using their car. And it is part of Ealing Council’s wider plans for encouraging more ‘active travel’ around the borough by bike and on foot – to cut congestion and improve air quality, as well as encourage more people to Get Moving for their health.

The bike port is not just near to the centre, it also serves the new homes in the regenerated Green Man Lane Estate.

Dr Abdulkarim Khalil, CEO of West London Islamic Centre (pictured with the bike port above), said: “It will make it easier for people who do come because they know that there is space available for them to park their bikes. Also, you have the new people living in these blocks around here, I am sure they will make a good use of the bike port.”

Live West Ealing is a joint project between the council and Transport for London (TfL). It aims to encourage residents of West Ealing to walk, cycle and take public transport, by improving the pavements, parks and cycle lanes.

Because of the coronavirus, the Live West Ealing project has been put on hold. Across London, funding streams have been reviewed and reallocated to respond to the immediate COVID-19 crisis. For TfL, this has meant prioritising temporary emergency schemes which immediately address the needs of people walking and cycling – to respond to social distancing and prevent a significant increase in car use. This will be delivered over the coming weeks and months, has been given the name of StreetSpace for London. Residents can find out more on TfL website.
