Hanwell Zoo: A wonderful day out

Council leader Peter Mason visited Hanwell Zoo this week (20 July), a wonderful local attraction for visitors of all ages, located in Brent Lodge Park.

He got a first-hand look at the fantastic education and conservation work being done at the zoo and even met a few of the most charismatic creatures residing there, including ring-tailed lemurs, flamingos and one of the newest additions – an armadillo.

Councillor Mason said: “Over the last few months, every effort has gone into making everything COVID secure for visitors and staff and of course, there has also been a great deal of focus on conservation.

“There are so many incredible animals for visitors to see now including capybaras, porcupines, cranes, alpacas and flamingos. The tamarin monkeys and meerkats are particularly charismatic and a joy to see – there’s even an armadillo now.

“I know the newest addition will be of great interest to people. A baby grey slender loris was born here at Hanwell Zoo a few months ago and is being looked after by the zookeepers behind the scenes for now, because it is still very delicate at this young age.

“Both the baby and parents hope to be presented to the public later this summer so hopefully visitors will be able to meet them in the not-too-distant future.

“I’m really proud to have the zoo in the heart of our borough – it’s a real gem for both local people and visitors from far and wide and I’d encourage families, those with an interest in the natural world or anyone who wants to support the valuable work the zoo is doing, to plan a trip this summer.”

Entrance fees start at just £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for children, with under-threes admitted for free. There are also annual season tickets and membership packages available at great prices – with your entrance money essential in funding the running costs of the zoo into the future.
