Ealing Council is participating in an environmental, sustainability and wellbeing project in partnership with the Canal River Trust (CRT), a charity working to transform canals and rivers in England and Wales into spaces where local communities want to spend time and feel better.
During the week from 16 to 20 August 2021, council staff who are part of the Kickstart scheme for young people will participate in a range of exciting activities along the canal. The initiative is designed to help them learn more about the environment, sustainability and their role in protecting the planet.
Starting from the Hanwell stretch of the canal, the week-long activities will include an ecological nature walk, learning about canal engineering, kayak on the canal, as well as taking social action and doing a litter pick at the Southall stretch of the canal path, which is in partnership with Greener Ealing and Litter Action Group for Ealing Residents (LAGER Can). We will then return to Ealing at the end of the week where Canal River Trust will help to consolidate the learning and do a presentation.

Climate action
Tackling the climate crisis is one of the three key priorities for the borough set out in the Council Plan 2021-22. Ealing Council has formally adopted its Climate and Ecological Emergency Strategy, which will see wide-ranging and bold measures to tackle the threat of climate catastrophe on a local level. The aim is to become carbon neutral, as a borough and an organisation by 2030. This will be achieved both through reducing the council’s own emissions and improving air quality across the borough by working closely with residents, volunteers and the business community.
This initiative is part of our continuous efforts to keep our borough green and clean, so we can all enjoy the benefits of nature, a free local source of wellbeing.
