A new cycle route connecting parts of the borough to offer a safer and more scenic journey to cyclists has opened today, 24 March.
The 4km route, which runs between Chiswick, Acton Central and North Acton, has been launched by Transport for London (TfL) and is being delivered in addition to Ealing Council and TfL’s existing programme to build a new walking and cycling infrastructure, unlocking cycling to thousands of people.
This new route, one of three launched by Transport for London (TfL) is the first of a series to be put in place on mainly quieter local streets.
The new Cycleway in Ealing open today is Cycleway 49 – a 4km route between Chiswick. Acton Central and North Acton, connecting to C9 (Kew Bridge to Hammersmith) C27 (East Acton to Walthamstow) and C34 (North Acton to Wood Lane).
Cycling in Ealing made easier
Councillor Deirdre Costigan, Ealing Council cabinet member for climate action comments: “It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to better connect Ealing to the rest of the capital with this new cycleway. I’m delighted that cycling on the route has already increased by a whopping 300% between 2019 and 2021.
“Our decision to make Fishers Lane a dedicated cycling, walking and bus route has been central to delivering this new cycle route, along with a number of additional cycle crossings, widening the entrance to Southfields Rec and improved cycle signage. We are committed to invest at least £10million to increase cycling and walking in Ealing, creating more cycle lanes and space for active travel. This not only supports our residents to get active, but also helps to improve air quality and reduce harmful emissions from unnecessary car journeys.”
Cycleways play a vital role in helping Londoners to cycle accessing jobs, schools and hospitality in a healthy and sustainable way. Recent schemes build on changes made by London boroughs to reduce through traffic on residential streets meaning that new cycle routes can be introduced that meet the required standards to be part of the capital’s network of high-quality Cycleways. This will see over 124,000 more Londoners within 400m of a high-quality cycle route.
