There are young people, across the borough, who are living in digital poverty with no access to a laptop or similar device.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how much we rely on digital access to accomplish everyday tasks. Having access is no longer considered a luxury and is a core part of how we live, whether it’s connecting with family and friends, accessing education or seeking job opportunities.

Ealing Council has partnered with PayByPhone, the council’s phone parking provider, and the charity Digital Poverty Alliance and launched Donate Your Device to help fight digital poverty.

‘Terrific scheme’​

Councillor Steve Donnelly, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for inclusive economy said: “This is a terrific scheme and I’m very pleased that the council has joined forces with PayByPhone, the Digital Poverty Alliance and Computer Recyclers UK.

“I know that, like me, there will be many residents who have devices they no longer use, and because they often hold personal information, it is not always easy to get rid of them. This scheme ensures that all devices are wiped of any information held on them, protecting our privacy. And once refurbished, they will benefit those in our community who are digitally excluded – it’s a win win.”

How can you help? ​

In the UK, 26% of young people do not have access to a digital device. By donating your old devices, you can contribute directly and help tackle this issue.  If you have any unwanted devices, including phones, laptops or tablets, please drop them off to one of the locations listed below.  

Drop off your devices at one of the donation locations below:

• Acton Library W3 6NE
• Dominion Centre and Southall Library UB2 4BQ
• Northolt Library UB5 5AS
• Ealing Central Library W5 5JY

All open Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays – 10am to 5pm; and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays – 10am to 7pm.

• Hanwell Community Centre – open Wednesday and Friday, 11am to 2pm.

Your data will be wiped securely using Computer Recyclers UK, an ADISA certified company, to ensure your privacy is protected. Those devices that can be reused will be refurbished before being donated to young people in the borough who may otherwise not be able to afford a device. Devices that are not fit for reuse will be stripped for parts and recycled responsibly.  

If you are over 18 and from a low income household you can get free mobile data at one of the councils community hubs.
