Are you ready to vote?

On Thursday 4 July, the general election is going to decide who will form the country’s next government. Are you ready to vote?

On polling day, it will be up to you to vote for your preferred candidate to represent your constituency area as its Member of Parliament (MP). MPs are elected using the ‘first past the post’ system. This means you vote once for a candidate in your constituency and the candidate with the most votes becomes your MP. And, at the end of election day, the political party with the most MPs across the country has the opportunity to form the government for the next 5 years.

How does it work?

To vote in the general election you must be 18 years or over on 4 July, and be a British, Irish or commonwealth citizen.

In our borough, there are 3 constituencies – Ealing Central and Acton; Ealing North; and Ealing Southall – and each constituency is represented by one MP.

When you vote on Thursday, 4 July, the ballot paper will show the name of all candidates standing in your constituency and you will have 1 vote for 1 of those candidates.

Find details of your polling station, a list of candidates, and other useful information ahead of the big day.

Details of your polling station, including a map, will also be on your polling card sent through the post.

Remember photo ID

It’s important to remember that photo ID is now required when voting in person at polling stations. This is because of a change in legislation last year.

So, you must make sure you take one with you when you go to vote.

Voters will only need to show one form of photo ID, but it must be the original. Copies will not be accepted.

You will be able to use expired photo ID if you are still recognisable from the photo. You can find out more about what forms of photo ID are accepted on the council’s website.
