To celebrate World Car Free Day on Sunday 22 September, you have the opportunity to close your street for a few hours over that weekend to enjoy a day of play – traffic free, and free of charge.

To help you do this, Ealing Council is waiving road closure fees and making the application process as quick and easy as possible.

The first few applicants will also receive a free play kit, which comes complete with chalk, stickers, high-vis jackets and play ideas to help get Car Free Day off to a good start. All roads will also be entered to win a spacehopper from London Play Streets.

How to join in

Any street that isn’t a main road, bus route or emergency vehicle route can apply to take part. All you need to do is apply here by midday on Friday 30 August.

Car Free Day is all about providing traffic-free space for you to spend a day outdoors with your families and neighbours, and London Play Streets, the organiser of this annual event, is also offering free space hoppers or other play equipment to participating streets.

A cleaner, greener borough

Events like Car Free Day are part of a wider programme of the council’s work to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, to improve road safety and to make it easier for you to choose healthier, more sustainable travel options like walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.

Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, said: “I’m so pleased we’re marking Car Free Day across the borough again. It’s a great opportunity for neighbours to get to know each other and experience a day of play in their street, traffic free. It also supports our work towards creating a cleaner and greener borough.

“I hope as many streets as possible can join in, for what promises to be a great day of bringing people closer together and further connecting our wonderful community.”

Bond Street in central Ealing will also be closed to cars on Sunday 22 September for a street fair for Car Free Day.
