Overcoming language barriers: Tasleem’s story

A woman in a headscarf poses for a photo, resting her chin on her hand.

Tasleem Kosar moved to the UK 20 years ago with no English language skills. After a friend encouraged her to enrol in an ESOL course, Tasleem now confidently communicates with teachers, doctors, and others.

“I feel like I’ve learnt so many things on this course and I’m so confident speaking English”, Tasleem explained. “I speak much better every year. I didn’t have any confidence at the beginning, and now I understand everything when people are speaking to me.”

Tasleem is set to open a restaurant and enjoys traveling, having gained practical skills like making bookings.

“In these sessions, I learnt we can do anything; we can even change our life if we want to. I like cooking very much, and I hope I will soon open a family restaurant. A few weeks ago, we organised a picnic to celebrate our English achievements, and everybody appreciated the dishes I shared, which means a lot to me.

“I cannot believe how patient and helpful our teacher – Daniela Cujba was; she always answered our questions and explained in a way we could understand. I’m really thankful and I would encourage everyone to enrol on this course.”

Who can apply?

You can sign up for the courses if you are 19 or older, live in London, and are an EEA citizen or have the right to stay in the UK for over 12 months.

Alternatively, you can also apply if you or a family member have certain immigration statuses, such as refugee or asylum seeker, or are part of specific schemes like the Ukraine or Afghan schemes. Find out more in the prospectus.

Delivering good and well-paid jobs

Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, the council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes, said: “One of the council’s key commitments is to deliver 10,000 good and well-paid jobs for the borough, and Learn Ealing is working to ensure that all its students can take advantage of those new opportunities. These courses are designed to empower adult learners with the skills and qualifications needed to advance their careers, regardless of their backgrounds.
