Doing more good than just paying London Living Wage

“When you’re paying people decent money, 50% of their worries are gone”, said Greg Wixted, founder of Tastes Good Does Good.

Based in Park Royal, purpose-driven food group, Tastes Good Does Good has been paying more than the London Living Wage since the company was set up in June 2020.

The group runs a multitude of initiatives, from supporting young chefs by giving up to 75% of food businesses for them to run, to donating up to 15% of their revenue to food charities so they can buy whatever they need.

‘A much better quality of life’

Rachel Jimoh has been working as a baker with Tastes Good Does Good for almost a year. She said:

“In my role, I enjoy meeting lots of new people and being challenged with each new booking.

“Being paid more than the London Living Wage gives me a much better quality of life. It’s made it easier to put money aside each month as well as pay my bills.

“Paying the London Living Wage can help everybody to invest in themselves and in any other ventures they might want to pursue.”

‘Productivity goes up’

Greg thinks that ensuring people are paid enough to support themselves and their families is vital. He added:

“How can we say that we do good when we’re paying people less than the cost to live? From the day we set up the business, we’ve paid people more than the London Living Wage.

“Our employees are happier, and they enjoy coming to work. People care more about the business and productivity goes up. They put a lot more into it, and that is obviously better for us.”

Unlock access to incentives and support

Paying the London Living Wage is good for business. Employers who sign up to become accredited by 31 March 2025 will be able to access a range of benefits from Ealing Council.

Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, the council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes, said:

“It’s wonderful to hear the first-hand experience of local businesses, and the advantages of the London Living Wage to everyone whether you’re the employer or an employee. I’m pleased that we now have over 70 accredited employers in the borough, and we’re committed to helping more pay the London Living Wage through our incentive scheme. Make sure your business becomes accredited by 31 March.”
