Graduates from a programme to help women starting out in business discovered a new-found confidence after completing the latest course.
Last week, the third group of women to complete the University of West London (UWL)’s Start-up Enterprise Support for Women programme came together to celebrate their successes.
The programme is led by UWL’s Westmont Enterprise Hub and funded through money from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which was successfully secured by the council.
The 8-week programme helps women to understand what it takes to run a successful business, with support including in-person training sessions and opportunities to develop their ideas.
Graduates get free use of the Westmont Enterprise Hub space for 3 months and access to finance and marketing aftercare workshops.
Although women from all backgrounds can join, those who may not have access to mainstream business support services are particularly welcomed.
‘It changed my life’
Indy Bhamra runs IKB Eventworks, an event planning company. She found that the programme gave her confidence to think differently and more positively about her business idea.
“It has changed my life for the better,” she said. “A few months after leaving my job, I started my business and felt more confident in doing so because of what I had taken away from the programme. I would highly recommend it to women thinking about starting a business.”
Supporting the female business community
Lisa Montgomery, nutritional therapist and owner of Lisa Holistic Therapies, highly recommends the programme. She said:
“The fact that it is offered for free is a testament to the council’s commitment to supporting women, whether they are busy mums or young entrepreneurs. The course structure is thoughtfully designed, and the in-person format allows us to build meaningful relationships and establish a supportive network, which is invaluable for those of us working solo. I’ve formed connections with amazing women that I’m sure will last beyond the course. Access to the business hub post-course is an exceptional bonus.”

Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, the council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes, said:
“I’m so pleased that this programme continues to empower and support women from all backgrounds in starting their own businesses and fulfilling their potential. It’s inspiring to hear from participants how valuable the sessions have been for both their personal growth and their business ventures. This initiative equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to pursue their dream of starting a business, which could lead to a real contribution to the local community and economy.”
