This year’s theme, identified by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is ‘For a Better Future’. It is a call for people to come together, learn about the Holocaust and more recent genocides, and take action to make a better future for all.
‘We come together’
Council leader Peter Mason said: “Eighty years on from the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, and 30 years on from the genocide in Bosnia, we come together to remember the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions more who were victims of Nazi persecution and other genocides.
“In order to create a better future, we must look to the past. There is no place for antisemitism, discrimination and hate in today’s society. Within the borough and beyond, I hope we can come together to learn from these tragic moments in history and create a better future where people are not suffering prejudice or persecution because of their faith, ethnicity or other characteristic.”
