Free costume swap for World Book Day

Do you see yourself as a wizard, dinosaur, or perhaps an Angelina Ballerina this World Book Day?

Get some inspiration by coming along to Acton Market this weekend for a free costume swap, in preparation for World Book Day. It gives people the chance to save money and find a fancy dress costume in a sustainable way.

The swap will be taking place on Saturday 1 March from midday to 2pm at St Mary’s Church, next to Acton Market, ahead of World Book Day on Thursday 6 March.

Give or take

Anyone coming along to the event can either give donations, take donations or both. It is all about getting everyone to wear their clothes for longer. Through the costume swap, you can give a new lease of life to clothes that children and adults no longer need.

Donations needed

To make the event a success, donations are urgently needed for the swap. You can drop off clean and good condition costumes and accessories that are no longer needed on the day until 1pm or at the following drop off points:

• ActOne Cinema and Cafe, The Old Library, 119-121 High Street, Acton, London W3 6NA
• Northfields Community Library: 255A Northfield Avenue, Ealing London W5 4UA
• West Ealing Library, Melbourne Avenue, West Ealing, London W13 9BT

‘Small changes have a big impact’

The event is supported by Ealing Council and other partners, and is one of a growing number of activities to reduce waste and show a commitment to the circular economy.

The circular economy involves keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible, minimising waste, and reducing the demand for new resources. Instead of the traditional economy, where items are used and discarded, the circular approach emphasises reusing, repairing, and recycling. This is crucial for reducing environmental impacts and ensuring a more sustainable future.

Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, said: “World Book Day is a brilliant annual event to get children excited about reading and have some fun in the process, but it is so disheartening to see so many perfectly re-usable costumes go to waste year after year.

“This event provides an excellent opportunity for residents to make small changes that have a big impact. From reusing and repairing to reducing waste, everyone can contribute to creating a greener borough.”

Reduce and recycle

As well as the exciting costume swap, Acton Market’s Reduce and Recycle hub will be open from 11:30am to 3pm on Saturday 1 March running all their usual activities such as book swap, clothes collection, seed swap, Ealing Repair Cafe and more. The current funding for the hub is coming to an end in March. In order to keep it going, the hub has created a Crowdfunder campaign to secure its future.

The hub has helped to divert tonnes of waste from landfill and provided a place where residents can take part in and learn about reducing waste, the circular economy, and connect with local organisations dedicated to environmental causes.

Keep up to date with Acton’s recycling hub.
