Community champions kick start engagement on transport strategy

Residents are being invited to take part in a series of events to help shape plans for the future of transport in the borough.

Workshop events are being held in each of the borough’s 7 towns over the coming weeks, starting on 12 February in Acton.

Ealing Council is encouraging people who live or work in the borough to come and share their experiences of using different types of transport to get around. You can find a full list of events on the council’s website.

For those who can’t attend, you can take part in an online survey, which will run until 30 March.

The feedback will be used to create Ealing Council’s new transport strategy, which will set the course for transport plans in the borough over the next 16 years.

A focus on walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport

Due to be published this summer, the strategy will focus on making walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport more attractive ways to travel. This supports the council’s current investments into programmes that improve the safety and convenience of these modes of transport.

Council leader Peter Mason said: “A safe, affordable and efficient transport network is vital for our community to thrive. And small changes to the way we travel can also help us stay healthy and improve our mental health and happiness.

“Walking, wheeling and cycling do just that, and as a council it’s our responsibility to make sure that these options, as well as public transport, are safe and practical for everyone to choose if they can.

“Most importantly, this strategy must be written using the voices of our community. We need to understand your challenges, frustrations and what stops you from choosing certain transport options.

“I hope as many people as possible will attend our events and share their feedback online.”

A champion start

At a meeting last Thursday (6 February), the council’s Community Champions gathered to share their initial ideas and thoughts on local travel options, and suggestions for future improvements – which will form part of the council’s research for the new transport strategy.

Community Champions are a network of residents that are passionate about helping their community thrive. They are trained and supported to talk to people and share their knowledge to inspire communities to lead healthy lives.
