Shopping around for retail skills

More than 60 jobseekers in the borough are set for careers in retail thanks to training funded and organised by Ealing Council.

The council’s Learn Ealing team teamed up with the Retail Skills Hub, launched by West London College, Spark!, and Westfield London shopping centre, to offer careers support and training to long-term unemployed adult learners in the borough.

The Retail Skills Hub offers support to people looking to start or grow their career in retail by equipping them with essential skills tailored to the sector. It also then helps them take steps towards securing jobs in the industry.

‘An opportunity I’m grateful for’

Karishma is currently studying English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), entry level 3, to help with her confidence to speak English. She heard about the Retail Skills Hub through her curriculum leader.

Karishma said: “I was so pleased to attend the Retail Skills Hub. It was an opportunity I’m really grateful for. I’ve never done anything in retail and there is no help to get a retail job in the country where I’m from, so this is very helpful for new students from non-English speaking countries.

“The workshops were really good, and included how to be in interviews and how to write a good CV. It was great to learn alongside other people, which gave me more motivation and confidence. I really enjoyed the whole experience.”

Following the visit, many of the attendees have been sending job applications to a number of different employers.

Karishma added: “Since the workshops, I have started applying for jobs, and I am more confident now when I complete application forms and speak to potential employers. I am working on my English personally and professionally, and my hope is to find a job where I can continue to gain experience.”

A shortage in retail

The Retail Skills Hub was established in response to a shortage of workers in the field across west London, where not enough applicants hold the required skills. The hub aims to address that by providing training and employment opportunities.

During the visit, learners received expert guidance on CV writing and application forms, specifically within the context of securing a job in retail. The learners were also offered ongoing follow-up support from the Retail Skills Hub training team.

After the success of this round of visits, more local jobseekers will be able to benefit from training at the hub in the future.

The training was funded through a grant won by Ealing Council from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

‘Providing impactful training’

Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, the council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes, said: “Hearing from Karishma shows how incredibly beneficial the interactive sessions at the Retail Skills Hub are, leaving learners with a newfound knowledge and motivation, helping them feel more prepared for the job market.

“In line with our jobs and skills strategy, we’re committed to supporting residents to access good, well-paid jobs. By collaborating with organisations like the Retail Skills Hub, we will be able to provide impactful training that helps individuals feel more confident to begin or invest time in their careers.”
