In April last year we announced our plans to invest £28million into the borough’s streets to make them more attractive to live, work and visit, and to make choosing forms of active and sustainable travel – like walking, wheeling, cycling and taking public transport, – easier and safer.
This huge investment covers work around improving cycling, road safety and public transport, and includes schemes such as Get Southall Moving, Visions for Northolt and School Streets.
More cycling opportunities
Last week, we approved our 10-year plan for cycle routes – a significant step forward in our ambitions for improving local cycling conditions.
Many residents have told us that getting on a bike can be daunting, especially on the road, but our new Cycle Network Plan, will allow people of all abilities to choose cycling, if they want to, when travelling around the borough.
The plan will improve our current infrastructure by introducing new cycle lanes, clearer signs and road markings and most importantly segregated routes on main roads and safer routes through our 7 towns, parks and along the canals. We are already working with Transport for London on improving cycling in Boston Road, Hanwell; and in Park Royal Road, North Acton.
As part of bringing more travel choices to the borough, residents of Southall have been able to use rental e-bikes and e-scooters since July 2024, and they are arriving in Northolt and Greenford this spring.
This will help more of us choose bikes when making a quick trip to the shops, to school or perhaps to work and will go a long way towards reducing the congestion on our roads and cleaning our air.
Working with residents to change the way we travel
In line with our Travel in Ealing Charter, we are continuing to trial new ways of capturing our residents’ thoughts and views on how we are making changes to travel in the borough.
This week, we were pleased to see residents from Northfields and Hanwell at an event to discuss proposals to improve Leighton Road and Elthorne Park Road. This is part of our work to improve 7 streets around the borough which have historic traffic and safety issues.
Next month, we will be starting a series of workshops around the borough to ask you how you like to travel around the borough, what frustrates you about it and what changes you would like to see. This will then form the basis for our new transport strategy, to be published this summer.
Please keep an eye on the council’s social media for the dates and times of workshops in your area. Or sign up for the council’s weekly Around Ealing Extra email by clicking on the ‘Subscribe’ button available on most pages of Around Ealing website.
