Survey shows progress – and shapes priorities

We made a set of promises to you in 2022, when we published the ‘council plan’, setting out our 4-year goals – running up to 2026. We are 3 years in, and making great progress getting the things done that we said we would. The most recent residents’ survey tells us many of you are in agreement,

More than 4 in every 5 people said they thought that the council was doing a good job and, also, that it was making the area a better place to live.

And, as we head into the fourth and final year of the current council plan, the residents’ survey findings also provide valuable insights into what the council should prioritise.

We’ve been working hard over the last year, and have made good headway on our 3 key priorities – fighting inequality, tackling the climate crisis and creating good jobs. We know that these issues matter to you, too, because you have told us and we have listened.

Fighting inequality

According to the survey, the proportion of people feeling safe after dark (60%) is lower than those who feel safe during the day (95%). So, addressing the fear of crime has been identified as one of the council’s priorities for the year ahead. In addition to what we have already done this year, you can expect more street lighting, alleyway gating and a continued partnership with the council’s CCTV control room and the police to reduce crime and make our streets safer.

Climate crisis

We listen to what you have to say when you don’t agree with our approach, too. We recently proposed to introduce a controlled parking zone to Greenford to address the high demand for parking and improve local traffic conditions. But this won’t be happening, after we gave careful consideration to your views. Instead, we have agreed that we can look at other ways to improve air quality, promote active and sustainable travel, and create safer, more accessible neighbourhoods.

Creating good jobs

Around 2 in 3 of people (63%) who answered the survey agree the council is working to create good jobs for local people. We’ve already made great progress over the last 2 years, creating thousands of good and well-paid jobs and are on target to reach 10,000 by 2026. We have also announced our new jobs and skills plan, and have been campaigning to get more businesses in the borough to join us in becoming London Living Wage employers.

Watch this space…

A lot has been achieved but we know there is always more to be done. We have been ambitious in our goals, but realistic. There’s lots being done, even as I write this blog, and we will keep you updated on our progress.
