Affordable cycling scheme at Copley

Residents at a Hanwell estate will benefit from a bike hire membership to encourage more people to take up cycling and leave their cars at home.

Ealing Council has joined forces with Brompton Bike Hire to offer a free premium membership to the social and affordable housing residents at Copley W7, which is undergoing an award-winning regeneration.
The free memberships will allow the residents to hire bikes at the lowest day rates, and also mean they do not have to pay an annual membership fee.

Brompton will also organise regular cycling days at the estate to help residents to build their confidence on the bikes – whether they are new to cycling or have just not been on a bicycle for a while.

Making cycling accessible for all

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of the council, attended the opening ceremony. He said: “I’m delighted to be welcoming Brompton Bike Hire to the Copley Estate and to continuing our commitment to making cycling accessible for all.

“We want to give as many people the opportunity to try cycling, so we’re thrilled about the focus Brompton is placing on creating an integrated experience for our residents by offering bike hire at an affordable price and cycling experience days to help with their confidence to start riding.

“We believe this initiative will encourage the growth of cycling in the area and bring noticeable benefits to the local community, such as improving air quality and tackling climate change by influencing our residents to use sustainable modes of transport.”

Julian Scriven, Brompton Bike Hire’s director, said: “One of the barriers to entry to cycling is the economic outlay of the bike, so we are pleased to offer this service to those considering a bicycle for the first time and are perhaps put off by initial cost. To genuinely create a modal shift away from cars and toward cycling, we need to make cycling accessible to all.”

The estate in Hanwell is being regenerated by the council, to provide new homes for council rent, private sale, discounted market rent and shared ownership.
