Young artists shine in Christmas card competition

Around 150 talented young artists entered their dazzling entries into Ealing Council’s annual Christmas card competition, and after much deliberation the winners have now been decided.

Children across the borough were invited to design a Christmas card that will be used by the Leader of the council, Peter Mason, alongside cabinet members and senior council officers, to send out Christmas greetings.

The theme was Christmas in the community, and the winners for each category are:

  • 6 years and under: Imogen Woolf (age 5) from Christ the Saviour School
  • 7-11 years old: Marcel from St John Fisher School
  • 12 years and older: Bianca Mocanescu (age 12) from Drayton Manor High School

Bianca’s stunning depiction of St Mary’s Church, Hanwell, captured the judge’s hearts and secured her spot as the overall competition winner. Her beautiful artwork of the church and a family of foxes will feature on the front of this year’s Christmas card sent by Councillor Mason, and the other 2 category winners’ designs will feature on the back cover.

Bianca’s victory is even more inspiring given her determination to succeed after receiving a special commendation in last year’s competition. This year, she entered again, motivated to take the top prize – and her persistence paid off.

She said: “I’m happy that I won, because I never really thought that I would be recognised twice in a row. My inspiration for the drawing was community and making things fit together for Christmas.

“The foxes were a representation of life during Christmas. Winter should be celebrated since it’s such a miraculous season.”

To celebrate her achievement, Bianca was visited at her school by council leader Peter Mason and was presented with a personal letter of thanks, and printed cards featuring her design.

Councillor Mason said: “I am bowled over by the creativity and talent of these young artists, and their artwork is truly inspiring. Bianca’s design beautifully captures the spirit of Ealing at Christmas, and it’s a joy to see such passion in our community.

“I want to congratulate Bianca, Imogen and Marcel for bringing the festive season alive through their artistry.”

In addition, chief executive Tony Clements visited Christ the Saviour School to celebrate with Imogen, and the council’s deputy leader, Councillor Louise Brett, visited St John Fisher School to meet Marcel and recognise his outstanding contribution.

Heartfelt congratulations are extended to all participants, and we thank the borough’s young artists for filling this festive season with joy, colour, and creativity.
