More than a million people are living in fuel poverty in London – the highest number since records began. A new ‘clean’ energy company aims to improve this situation while also helping the environment, too.

Londoners are spending an estimated £3.5billion on gas and electricity household bills every year. On top of this, London’s residents have high usage levels of pre-payment meters and low levels of energy efficiency measures, smart meters and solar panels.

As a response, plans for a new, fair-priced, green energy company for Londoners have been announced. London Power is a partnership between City Hall and Octopus Energy that aims to supply the capital with more clean energy to help tackle high energy bills and make the capital’s homes warm, healthy and affordable.

It is being set up as part of the Energy for Londoners programme to reduce carbon emissions from homes and tackle fuel poverty in the capital.

London Power will be available exclusively for Londoners and will offer consumers competitive prices, a 12-month fixed tariff for electricity and gas, 100% renewable electricity and a roll-over on to the cheapest comparable tariff once their contract has expired.

Any profits made by City Hall will be reinvested into community projects to help tackle fuel poverty and make London a zero-carbon city; as well as protecting fuel-poor residents, including those who use pre-payment meters to ensure they are not left vulnerable during winter.
