Woodlands visit to Copley

Mini-builders enjoy trip to Copley

A little crew of mini-builders paid a visit to see the unfolding work on the second phase of Copley estate’s redevelopment.

The group of 10 children were selected from Woodlands Academy Primary School in West Ealing to visit the council-owned site nearby in Hanwell. They ranged in age from nursery to Year 3, and were excited to see the latest stage of Ealing Council’s huge building project.

Alton Court on Copley will comprise of 33 new homes for shared ownership and private sale, and also houses a new marketing suite. The homes will consist of one- and two- bedroom apartments and three-bedroom houses.

Devon Johnson, the senior site manager for developers United Living, said: “It’s part of our corporate responsibility to invite school children in but, for me, I just really enjoy on a personal level, seeing the children’s excitement and enjoyment and hopefully inspiring them to think about jobs in the building industry.”

As you can see in the pictures above, the children were shown the building site in action and were able to ask questions from some of the builders on-site. Next they were taken into the completed area to see the new flats. They were very impressed and nursery school pupil Jason said: “I want to buy this flat for my mum.”

All the children were interested in how long the build had taken and the different jobs involved. They were amazed to see the big crane picking up rubble and saw a demonstration of the forklift truck at work.

United Living organised high-vis jackets and hard hats for the trip and also extras for the school to use on other excursions. Devon also presented all 10 children with goody bags at the end of the visit. “This has been the best day ever,” said Logan from Year 2.

Alexandra Thompson, from the Grand Union Multi-Academy Trust, which Woodlands is part of, said: “This was a very successful trip and a good link up to the builder of homes in our catchment area.”

The regeneration of Copley will provide a mix of new and refurbished homes for existing tenants, plus homes for private sale, shared ownership and discounted market rent.

It is a project that has been recognised for excellence in building and planning, and won ‘Best Conceptual Project’ at the prestigious London Planning Awards.
