People using North Acton Underground Station or visiting the surrounding area are set to benefit from brand new green spaces, safer infrastructure and easier access to the station thanks to a scheme which got under way earlier this month.
The council is transforming this vacant site in the heart the area, which was formerly a petrol station, into a new North Acton Station Square. When complete, the public space will boast open access to the tube station via a new access ramp and stairs.
What is more, new street lighting and high quality paving will modernise and ensure a safer space for residents, visitors and commuters. Green areas are to be planted and seating will also be introduced.
Earlier this month, council leader Julian Bell visited the site to see the launch of piling which kicked off the main works on site. Councillor Bell said: “This is a really positive scheme for North Acton. Improving access to and from the station will benefit both residents and commuters and help fulfil the potential of the local area even further.
“We remain committed to improving public spaces and encouraging people to walk, cycle or use public transport for journeys wherever possible. A safer more accessible space at North Acton is something that can help residents do just that.”
The first new stairway to the station is on track to open in midsummer, with the Station Square due to be fully open to the public next winter.
Commuters in the borough are also set to benefit from greater accessibility and step-free access at four other local tube stations, it was announced last week.
Northolt, North Ealing, Park Royal and Hanger Lane are among 13 stations in the capital to receive a share of £200million of investment from the Mayor of London, which aims to make Tube travel more accessible and open up the city for everyone.
Stair access to North Acton is currently only available from the ticket hall level to the platforms. Transport for London is investigating options for redeveloping the station, which will include lifts or equivalent fully accessible options.
