Traffic and parking penalty fines will increase in the borough of Ealing to deter the rising level of illegally parked cars from Monday 7 April.
The decision to increase fines by £30 was made by London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee, which is responsible for setting parking, bus lane and moving traffic penalty charges on borough roads.
This is the first fee increase in 14 years, and will take place across London, ensuring penalty charge notices (PCNs) remain effective deterrents and properly incentivise safe driving and parking. It will also:
- improve traffic flow and reduce congestion
- ensure parking fairness and accessibility
- improve custom outside local businesses
- encourage walking, wheeling, cycling and using public transport
Council leader Peter Mason said: “We have parking rules to keep people safe and ensure our streets and roads are accessible for everyone. Unfortunately, a small number of antisocial drivers continue to park dangerously and illegally. Our message is clear: park illegally and you will be punished. Follow the rules and you will be fine.
“By law councils cannot use parking fines to generate revenue, any income received is strictly governed and can only be used for concessionary travel support, such as Freedom Passes, and for transport and highways improvements.”
Ealing Council brought parking services back under its control with Greener Ealing, a council subsidiary, last year, allowing the council to have a greater oversight of the quality of service and it continues to operate well.
