Table tennis. Over-55s sport

Could you represent Team Ealing?

Are you aged 55 or over and feeling sporty? Gurnell Leisure Centre is putting together a Team Ealing to compete at a ‘mini-Olympics’.

The Better Club Games will take place at the Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park, Stratford, on Friday, 11 November. The event is for over-55s and will see teams from across the country compete in sports such as table tennis, badminton and walking football.

Just visit Gurnell Leisure Centre to find out more about how you could get involved.

To help you get in the mood, a new activity programme tailored for the age group has been started at the leisure centre, which is in Ruislip Road East.

Membership of this new Over 55 Health and Fitness Club will give you access to special activities on Thursdays (which the centre is calling ‘club day’) and off-peak access (7am-5pm) the rest of the week to the gym, swimming pool, fitness classes and the steam and sauna room. Memberships cost £33.50 per month.

The new activities have been set up following a successful series of free taster sessions of table tennis, short matt bowls, darts, dominoes, a deep water workout class, a group cycling class; plus swimming and access to the gym, sauna and steam room.

‘Social, active and very enjoyable’

Anne-Marie (pictured right, third from the left) has been attending the free taster days. The 66-year-old said:

“It’s great to come along and know you’ll have a day out that’s social, active and very enjoyable. You get to meet new people and do as much or as little as you like. We really would encourage anyone to come with a friend or alone as you will get to meet lots of people here.”

You could compete for Team Ealing

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure, said: “We know that healthy bodies lead to healthy minds.   This membership will provide a fantastic opportunity for people to be more active while getting to meet like-minded people.

“And Team GB’s brilliant performance in Rio might also be inspiring some to take part in competitive sports themselves. Go down to Gurnell and see what’s on offer – you might just find yourself competing for Team Ealing in London 2012’s Copper Box Arena.”
