Picture 3 Robin in wintry garden by Ian Strachan

Seasons of Ealing makes a comeback

Before the pandemic, we ran a very popular photography competition for readers called Seasons of Ealing. Well, it’s back.

There were some amazing entries for every season – winter, spring, summer and autumn – including the great picture of the robin in this story from 2018 by Ian Strachan. Winter 2019/20 where it all ended because, soon after, we were all asked to stay indoors because of COVID.

But the time seems right to get your cameras and phones out again and show off something you love in the borough, or a moment in time, that reflects the season.

The twist is that the public get to vote for the winner. First of all, we want your snaps sent in. We then shortlist the top 10 before asking the good people of our borough to pick their favourite.

What’s in it for you?

Well, we publish the winner and at least one of the runners up online at aroundealing.com and in the next available edition of Around Ealing magazine. And any of the shortlisted entries could feature in the future – with you named as the photographer.

The winner will also get tickets to Ealing’s new cinema, thanks to our sponsors Ealing Picturehouse.

Get snapping

The winter 2023/24 Seasons of Ealing competition opens on 1 December 2023 and will close on 19 January 2024. At that point, a shortlist will be selected and a public vote will decide the winner. Our aim is to run the competition every season, giving you multiple opportunities to enter throughout the year.

The idea is for you to enter your own snaps of anything wintry in your local park or back garden or even in your street. It could be a landscape, a skyline, wildlife, your family playing in fallen leaves; whatever takes your eye and lifts your spirits. The key is that it has to have been taken in the borough – and, must have been taken by you.

How do I enter?

Email your photo to aroundealing@ealing.gov.uk by the closing deadline for entries, which is 11.59pm on 19 January 2024.

For your photo to be considered, you must:

• put Seasons of Ealing in the subject line of the email
• include your name, postal address and phone number
• include a brief description of what the photo is of, when you took it and where you took it
• state that the photo was taken by you, and that you also have permission of any people whose faces appear in the photo to enter the photo into the Seasons of Ealing competition
• make sure the image is of a high enough resolution to be reproduced online and in print (poor quality images will not be considered)

What happens then?

After the deadline for entries, a panel will judge the entries and select a shortlist. These shortlisted photos will be showcased on our website aroundealing.com – and then everyone can get involved because the winner will be selected via an online public poll.

After the poll has closed, the winning photo will be featured in an edition of Around Ealing magazine.

Other things to know

By entering the competition you are agreeing for your photo to be reproduced in Around Ealing magazine, aroundealing.com website, and the council’s social media channels. No remuneration will be possible, but you will be named as the photographer if it is used in the Around Ealing magazine or website.

We will not, unfortunately, be able to reply to everyone who has entered the competition.

If any image is found not to have been taken in the borough, or to have broken any of the other conditions outlined above, the photo will be disqualified from the competition.

Will there be more competitions?

Yes, we intend for this to continue and another Seasons of Ealing competition is due to run in the spring. Keep an eye on Around Ealing magazine and aroundealing.com for details nearer the time. Even better, make sure you are signed up to the weekly Around Ealing Extra email to make sure you get the news first – you can sign up via an Ealing Council My Account or by signing up directly online.
