Uniting communities through cricket

Sporty school pupils in the borough are being invited to sign-up and take part in a free cricket coaching programme, which starts in the new year.

The 10-week programme is open to boys and girls aged 11-16 years old who attend a state school in the borough. All levels of ability are encouraged to sign up and take part.

The course is run by the MCC Foundation (MCCF), a cricket charity, and is held at Featherstone Sports Centre, in Montague Waye, Southall.

You will need to sign up for a trial session, taking place on 21 January 2025. There are 2 sessions to choose from: under-14s and under-16s. The programme starts the following week and will run until 1 April.

Improving wellbeing

Tanuj Danee, one of the MCCF coaches, said: “Come and trial with us. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you don’t try, you’ll won’t find out if this is a sport you will thrive in.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for children and families in the borough to be a part of. We provide free coaching and match play to empower all boys and girls to reach their full potential in the game, to unite and inspire communities, and to promote physical and mental wellbeing.”

The sports centre, which is owned by Ealing Council, is home to lots of other community interests too, including a climbing wall, holiday activity programmes, fitness classes and more.

Councillor Blerina Hashani, the council’s cabinet member for thriving communities, said: “Team sports like cricket are a great way to bring communities together, particularly young people. This is a great opportunity to meet new friends, grow in confidence, connect with others, and a fun way to stay active.”

After the coaching programme is finished, there is an opportunity to compete against other teams across the capital that have also just completed the same training. The finals will be played at the world-renowned Lord’s cricket ground – the spiritual home of the Middlesex and England cricket teams.
